Leaf-peeping season is almost here: Where to see spectacular fall foliage across the US in 2026

Autumn officially begins on Sept. 22, and that means leaf-peeping season will soon be here.
Where and when the foliage will be most dramatic depends on location, altitude and weather. Leaves turn earlier in places with higher elevations and lower temperatures, so some parts of the northern and western U.S. are starting to see some color, while other destinations may not kick off their leaf-peeping seasons until October.

When and where can we see fall foliage at its peak?
Each fall, various forecast tools aim to predict the arrival of autumn foliage across the U.S. using precipitation and temperature statistics, historic trends for peak leaf peeping, local observations, and model outputs from previous years. Our favorites include The Old Farmer's Almanac and the Smoky Mountains Fall Foliage Prediction Map. Plus, camping app Hipcamp launched an interactive map to help you find campgrounds for leaf-peeping trips.
Even with these tools, no one can guarantee exactly where and when foliage will peak — especially with unusual weather patterns on the rise.
"Of course, past results do not necessarily indicate what will happen this year, but it should give you a fairly good idea of how fall leaves typically progress," an Old Farmer's Almanac representative said.
Here, we'll cover the country's top destinations for leaf peeping, and when to visit each for your best chance at seeing spectacular fall colors.
Best places in the US to see fall foliage
Northeast
For travelers on the East Coast, the foliage is just beginning to turn in New England's most popular leaf-peeping states. Prime destinations include the Vermont ski town of Stowe, the Berkshires mountain range in Massachusetts and Acadia National Park in Maine.
You can expect mountainous regions to reach maximum color toward the end of September and early October. Lower-elevation areas, like the Hudson Valley in New York and Bar Harbor, Maine, may peak a little later.
However, unexpected weather can shift these dates. Last year, a flash drought caused Vermont's leaves to drop early, while unseasonably warm weather in Pennsylvania delayed the leaf-peeping season.
To stay updated on your destination, check local reports. Many states and regions offer fall foliage reports with predictions and regular updates throughout the season; Maine and the Poconos have already launched theirs for 2026. West
The mountains of Colorado — known for their glorious gold and crimson aspen forests — are changing color earlier this year due to the state's prolonged drought. Peak foliage is expected to start in mid-September in the northern part of the state and travel south over the following weeks. The aptly named mountain town of Aspen is a great option, but there are plenty of brilliantly colored areas closer to Denver, such as Guanella Pass near Georgetown and Golden Gate Canyon State Park outside Golden.
Utah's unearthly landscapes may be best known for their sandstone cliffs and gravity-defying arches, but they're also great places to enjoy the fall foliage of canyon maple, scrub oak and more come early to mid-October. Plus, the autumnal light illuminates the red rocks spectacularly.
On the West Coast, Oregon's wild landscapes explode with color every fall. This year, Portland's foliage is expected to peak in mid- to late October. Take a steamboat ride to admire the changing leaves from the river, or drive the Columbia River Highway, a stretch of interstate designed specifically for its scenic vistas.

Midwest
Due to the Great Lakes' insulating effect, Michigan enjoys a long leaf-peeping season. This year's is already starting, with peak color forecast for early October in northern parts of the state and progressing south through late October. The famous M-119 road, also known as "Tunnel of Trees," recently reopened some sections after devastating floods earlier this year.
Parts of Missouri, such as Lake of the Ozarks, are great candidates for a leaf-peeping trip as well. By Nov. 1, the maple, oak, hickory and ash trees along the lake's 1,150 miles of shoreline will be a riot of painterly hues. However, the American smoke tree, which turns an almost electric shade of pink, tends to peak much earlier.
For a change of scenery, consider Lexington, Kentucky, where you can experience fall foliage from the water with a paddling tour along the Kentucky River or Elkhorn Creek. The leaves are expected to peak in the middle of November.

Mid-Atlantic and Southeast
For endless views this fall, plan a road trip along the Blue Ridge Parkway or the North Carolina coast. The state boasts a long leaf-peeping season thanks to a wide range of elevations. You can see spectacular color in the Great Smoky Mountains on the state's western side starting in early October, and that peak will shift east over the coming weeks, hitting the coast in early November.
Virginia's plentiful deciduous trees and varied landscape provide a long fall foliage season as well. The season should start in earnest toward the end of September, at which point the Virginia Department of Forestry will start updating its fall foliage report weekly.
For thinner crowds, consider Columbia, South Carolina. This hidden gem will be packed with color in late October and early November, whether you stay in town to explore Riverbanks Zoo and Three Rivers Greenway or head to nearby Congaree National Park — home to some of the country's oldest and tallest deciduous trees.

South
The farther south you go, the later leaf-peeping season starts, giving you a few extra weeks to plan a trip. Plus, you may not have to contend with as many crowds in these colorful Southern destinations.
For example, Louisiana has plenty of top spots for leaf peeping from late October through mid-November, including Chemin-A-Haut State Park, Lake Claiborne State Park and Jimmie Davis State Park.
Experience the vibrant red leaves of the bigtooth maple trees in Lost Maples State Natural Area outside San Antonio. The leaves likely won't start to change until late October; check back here for updates. Or try Garner State Park in southern Texas, where you can explore 11 miles of hiking trails and take in the varied hues of cypress, oak, mesquite and persimmon trees.
The town of Eureka Springs, Arkansas, is surrounded by enough blazing mountainsides to rival northern leaf-peeping spots — and it offers preserved Victorian buildings and therapeutic natural hot springs. Mid-October through early November is the best time to go.

If you're dreaming of a leaf-peeping trip, now is the time to book it. Even better, it doesn't have to eat up your travel budget or vacation days — with so many stellar destinations in the U.S., you can experience the magic of the season while staying close to home.
Though tools like the ones we mentioned can't make any guarantees, they are useful guides for determining where and when to travel for optimal fall colors. This is especially true for the maps, which update based on real-world user data gathered as the season unfolds.
