The Discover it® Student Cash Back offers students a way to build credit while earning cash back on everyday purchases.

Similar to the Discover it® Cash Back, it earns 5% cash back on rotating quarterly categories when you activate, plus at least 1% cash back on all other purchases, and Discover will automatically match all the cash back you earn during your first year.

With no annual fee and no credit score required to apply, it can be a strong starter card for students willing to keep track of its rotating bonus categories. Card rating*: ⭐⭐⭐½

Discover it Student Cash Back: The basics

The Discover it Student Cash Back is a no-annual-fee credit card designed for college students who are new to credit.

There's no credit score required to apply, and Discover reports account activity to the major credit bureaus, making it a straightforward option for students looking to establish a credit history.

The card's main rewards feature is its rotating 5% cash-back categories. You can earn 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in purchases each quarter in the featured categories, but you must activate the offer to earn the elevated rate. All other purchases earn at least 1% cash back.

The card also comes with Discover's unlimited Cashback Match for the first year (more on that below).

Through 2027, Capital One is merging all of Discover's card products into its system. If you're a current cardholder, your account should transition at some point over the next year. New cardholders will immediately be put on Capital One's network. Certain perks covered in this review may be unavailable for current cardholders until their account is migrated to Capital One.

Keep an eye out for an email about your account migration.

Discover it Student Cash Back pros and cons

ProsCons
  • No annual fee
  • No credit score required to apply
  • Unlimited first-year Cashback Match
  • Rotating bonus categories
  • Rotating categories require activation
  • Quarterly caps on bonus earnings

Discover it Student Cash Back benefits

The Discover it Student Cash Back is light on traditional credit card perks, but that's not necessarily a drawback for a student card with no annual fee. While its rotating cash-back categories are its biggest draw, the card also offers several useful benefits for students who are building credit.

Discover reports your account activity to the three major credit bureaus and provides free access to your FICO credit score, which can help you track your progress as you build your credit history.

You'll also get free identity alerts, the ability to freeze your account if your card is lost or stolen and $0 fraud liability for unauthorized purchases.

Once your account is on Capital One's network, you'll also receive access to Capital One Offers, which can provide opportunities to earn additional cash back on purchases with select merchants. Remember that new cardholders will be on Capital One's network immediately, while existing cardholders should keep an eye on their e-mails.

And because the card has no foreign transaction fees, it can be useful for students studying abroad or traveling internationally.

How to earn and use your rewards

Earning rewards

The Discover it Student Cash Back is relatively simple to use, though maximizing the card requires a little effort. You'll need to activate each quarter's 5% cash-back categories, then use the card for eligible purchases in those categories. The categories vary each quarter; for example, the third-quarter 2026 categories are gas stations and electric vehicle charging, airlines and public transportation and drugstores.

The elevated rate applies to up to $1,500 in purchases each quarter, after which eligible purchases earn 1% cash back.

I think this is a worthwhile trade-off for students who don't mind paying a little attention to their card. The quarterly categories can line up nicely with expenses you're already making, but they're less useful if you forget to activate them or don't spend much in the featured categories.

Once your account is on Capital One's network, you'll also earn 5% cash back on hotels, rental cars and activities booked through Capital One Travel, as well as 5% cash back on tickets and events booked through Capital One Entertainment. Existing cardholders won't receive these new earning rates until their accounts have migrated to Capital One.

For everything outside this card's bonus categories, you'll earn 1% cash back. This makes the card easy to use as a starter card, but I'd avoid relying on it for every purchase once you've established your credit and have access to cards with stronger everyday earning rates.

Discover's Cashback Match makes the first year especially valuable. Whatever cash back you earn during your first 365 days is automatically matched at the end of the period, with no cap on the match.

Redeeming rewards

You can redeem your cash back in a variety of ways, including:

  • Gift cards
  • Purchases through Amazon.com or PayPal
  • Statement credits
  • Deposits into a checking or savings account

After your account migrates to Capital One, you'll also be able to use your rewards toward eligible bookings through Capital One Travel and Capital One Entertainment.

While you won't get the potential outsize value that can come with transferable rewards, this is a solid variety of redemption options for cash-back fans.

Where the Discover it Student Cash Back falls short

The Discover it Student Cash Back's biggest drawback is that its rewards structure requires some maintenance. You have to remember to activate the quarterly categories, and the 5% rate is capped each quarter. If you don't want to track changing bonus categories, a flat-rate cash-back card may be a better fit.

The card also isn't designed for someone who has moved beyond the beginner stage of their credit card journey. Its 1% base earning rate is relatively modest, and it doesn't offer the transfer partners or premium benefits that can make other cards more valuable.

Discover it Student Cash Back vs. Discover it Student Chrome

Students deciding between Discover's two student cards should consider how they prefer to earn rewards. The Student Cash Back offers rotating 5% categories, while the Discover it® Student Chrome offers a simpler rewards structure focused on gas stations and restaurants (subject to a spending cap).

For students who don't mind activating categories and want the potential for higher rewards, I'd lean toward the Student Cash Back. Students who prefer a more predictable earning structure may find the Student Chrome easier to manage.

Is the Discover it Student Cash Back worth it?

For a student who is new to credit, the Discover it Student Cash Back is a solid choice. There's no annual fee, no credit score is required to apply and the first-year Cashback Match can significantly boost the value of the card. It's less compelling once you've established your credit and can qualify for cards with stronger ongoing rewards.

When to apply for the Discover it Student Cash Back

The Discover it Student Cash Back currently offers a limited-time $100 statement credit after you spend $300 within the first three months of account opening. Discover also provides an unlimited Cashback Match on all the cash back you earn during your first year.

That match can make the card particularly rewarding during your first year. It effectively doubles the 5% cash back earned in the card's quarterly bonus categories to 10% cash back. Once your account is on Capital One's network, the match can also effectively double the 5% cash back earned through Capital One Travel and Capital One Entertainment to 10% cash back.

To qualify for the card, you'll need to be enrolled at least part-time at a college or university. You'll also need a meaningful income of some kind or at least several thousand in savings.

Because the card is intended for students building credit, I'd focus less on waiting for a particular welcome offer and more on whether you're ready to use a credit card responsibly and pay your balance in full each month.

Other cards to consider if you don't want the Discover it Student Cash Back

There are multiple cards out there offering cash-back rewards for students. Here are some other options:

  • If you qualify for a nonstudent Discover card: The Discover it Cash Back offers the same rotating 5% cash-back structure as the student version, with activation required and quarterly spending caps. To learn more, read our full review of the Discover it Cash Back.
  • If you prefer earning flat-rate cash back: The Capital One Quicksilver Student Cash Rewards Credit Card is good for simple cash-back earnings, as you'll earn at least 1.5% cash back on every purchase with no limits to how much you can earn. Plus, you won't be charged an annual fee.
  • If you frequently spend on groceries, dining and entertainment: The Capital One Savor Student Cash Rewards Credit Card earns cash back at an elevated rate across multiple popular spending categories. You'll get an unlimited 3% back at grocery stores (excluding Walmart and Target) and on dining, entertainment, and popular streaming services — all for no annual fee.

Bottom line

The Discover it Student Cash Back is one of the better options for students who are starting their credit journey and want to earn rewards along the way. The combination of no annual fee, no credit score requirement to apply, rotating 5% cash-back categories and first-year Cashback Match gives the card plenty of appeal for beginners.

I especially like the first-year cash back match for first-time cardholders because it gives you an opportunity to get more value from purchases you're already making during your first year.

As Discover cards transition to Capital One's network, cardholders will also gain access to additional earning and redemption options through Capital One Travel and Capital One Entertainment.

Just remember to activate the quarterly categories and, most importantly, pay your balance on time and in full.
