Editor's Note

This is a recurring post, regularly updated with new information and offers.

Everyone's talking about premium credit cards these days, so it's easy to overlook a simple no-annual-fee card. But don't count them out. Whether you're brand-new to travel rewards or you've been racking up points and miles for years, a card like this can still earn its keep in your wallet.

The Discover it® Miles isn't flashy, but it's reliable. Its rewards are easy to understand, it has no annual fee and it's accessible to those just getting started with credit cards. That said, it shines its brightest when it's used as a complement to other cards or as a stepping stone to travel cards with annual fees.

Card rating*: ⭐⭐⭐½

Discover it Miles: The basics

At its core, the Discover it Miles is about earning miles without constant attention to bonus categories and spending caps. You'll earn at least 1.5 miles per dollar spent on all purchases.

Aside from this, the card offers fairly standard benefits for a no-annual-fee card. While you won't get lounge access, statement credits or elite status with this card, the simplicity of its perks is perfectly acceptable for a card with no annual fee.

Discover is widely accepted in the U.S., so you shouldn't have any trouble making purchases here. However, while Discover is accepted in more than 185 countries and territories, data points suggest acceptance abroad is more limited than for cards on the Visa or Mastercard networks.

Lastly, it's important to note that Capital One is currently moving all Discover products to its platform. This migration will take place through 2027, so make sure to pay close attention to your account. New cardholders should see their card on the Capital One network immediately.

Discover it Miles pros and cons

ProsCons
  • No annual fee
  • Earn unlimited miles
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • Miles are easy to redeem for cash back
  • Limited bonus categories
  • No transfer partners or ways to maximize redemption value

Discover it Miles benefits

The Discover it Miles is a great way to build credit, since its lack of an annual fee and accessible benefits mean it's a suitable fit for beginners and those looking to take their credit more seriously.

You'll be able to track your FICO score for free with this card, so you can see in real time how responsible use helps raise your score. Other perks, like contactless payment, fraud alerts and Social Security monitoring, are common across many credit cards.

Cardholders on the Capital One network can access Capital One Offers, earning up to 15 miles per dollar spent at select merchants.

I can't fault the Discover it Miles for keeping its benefits simple; it isn't intended to be a top-tier travel card, so I wouldn't expect it to offer statement credits or any kind of day-of-travel perks.

How to earn and use your rewards

The Discover it Miles has two bonus categories:

  • 5 miles per dollar spent on Capital One Entertainment†
  • 5 miles per dollar spent on hotels, rental cars and activities booked through Capital One Travel†

†Only available to cardholders on the Capital One network

You'll earn 1.5 miles per dollar spent on every other purchase. I advocate for earning more than 1 point per dollar spent whenever you can, so this card is a great way to add that capability to your wallet if it currently lacks it.

Beginners will also appreciate the opportunity to earn rewards on their purchases, since that's not something every starter card offers.

Your miles can be redeemed for cash back or as a statement credit for various purchases, including airfare, hotels, dining and gas. Alternatively, you can also redeem your miles for gift cards, purchases at Amazon or PayPal, travel through Capital One Travel and purchases through Capital One Entertainment.

Each mile you redeem is worth a flat 1 cent per mile, regardless of the redemption method you choose.

While Discover's lack of transfer partners means its miles aren't as valuable as other rewards currencies, the simplicity of this card's redemption options may be a welcome sight for some.

That's especially true if you're just getting started with rewards. There's no need to overwhelm yourself at the start with award flights, partner redemptions and points and miles sweet spots. Just keep it simple at the start with miles that are easy to redeem. Then, move on to earning transferable rewards when you feel ready.

Downsides to consider about the Discover it Miles

If you're looking for a card that offers more substantial perks like statement credits, elite status boosts or lounge access, the Discover it Miles won't be able to provide that. It's a card geared toward beginners and those looking for an easy-to-use card, and its perks reflect that.

In addition, if you want to maximize every dollar spent, you likely won't find significant value in the Discover it Miles card's sole earning rate. Its simplistic redemption methods may be lackluster for anyone already well-versed in transferable rewards.

This card works best as a foundation for a beginner or as a card for nonbonus spending — meaning any spending that falls outside a card's bonus categories — for those who are fine with redeeming their rewards for cash back.

Discover it Miles vs. Discover it Cash Back

The Discover it® Cash Back may be a better choice for some, since it offers the opportunity to earn more rewards on certain purchases. Cardholders earn 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in combined purchases each quarter on rotating categories (activation required). This is substantially more than the Discover it Miles card's 1.5 miles per dollar spent rate.

However, purchases outside those quarterly categories will earn 1% back (except for those made with Capital One Travel and Capital One Entertainment for cardholders on the Capital One network). That means the Discover it Cash Back isn't the best choice for nonbonus spending, or as a catch-all card for those interested in a one-card wallet.

Which card is best for you depends on whether you want to maximize earnings on some purchases or earn more than 1 point per dollar spent (or 1% cash back) on all purchases.

Is the Discover it Miles worth it?

If you're trying to build credit or you're a cash back fan looking for a place for your nonbonus spending, I believe the Discover it Miles can be a great choice. Since it doesn't charge an annual fee, it's a card you can keep in your wallet for years without worrying about squeezing value out of its perks.

If you're a points-and-miles enthusiast or you're ready to move on from cash back and into transferable rewards, another no-annual-fee card is likely a better option.

When to apply for the Discover it Miles

There isn't a traditional welcome offer on the Discover it Miles. Instead, Discover will match the miles you earn for the first year, with no limit or spending requirement.

That means your first-year earning rate is effectively 3 miles per dollar spent (or 3% cash back), which is very solid for a no-annual-fee card. You'll earn even more miles in your first year on Capital One Travel and Capital One Entertainment purchases (an effective 10 miles per dollar spent).

This is the standard offer on this card. I don't expect this offer to change anytime soon, so don't wait for a better one to apply.

Given that this is a no-annual-fee card, it should be fairly easy to get approved. However, approval is never guaranteed for any card, including ones geared toward beginners.

I applied for a Discover card as my first credit card several years ago and was rejected. If that happens to you, consider the reasons you're given and try again in a few months.

Bottom line

The Discover it Miles is a solid offering with easy-to-track rewards and basic benefits. It won't wow those familiar with premium travel rewards cards, but it provides a great starting point or catch-all card for the right person.

While there's plenty of value to be had from transferable rewards, there's also a lot of complexity that comes with that. If you'd rather keep it to the basics, the Discover it Miles may be the perfect pick.
